Love: Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is a gorgeous grape. Usually used for blending because of its very strong character, I’ve seen some really beautiful examples of straight Petit Verdot recently.

Two of these for you to try are:

Adina Winery, Hunter Valley, NSW 2005 ($20AUD per bottle)
– My personal favorite. I bought a case last month and am savoring my last few bottles. Its been a great drinking treat for after work with my housemate and friends. Drinks best with light, mild cheeses and nuts. Oh – and chocolate also fits nicely…

Optimiste Winery, Mudgee, NSW 2006 ($18AUD per bottle)
– Gorgeous wine with great character. A must try for the price.

  1. I didn’t often drink wine. It was always seemed easier to opt for the standard cold beer. No room for confusion and very little room for error or disappointment. Let’s be honest, there are really only two choices – low in alcohol or high in alcohol. Take your pick depending on your mood, or future intended mood as the case may be!! (Apologies to those who have dedicated their life to the intricate art of beer brewing).

But then I started spending time with Kristen. Wine is now on the menu and the order has become a part of the experience. The exploration of wine region, calendar year and barrel type no longer leaves me in a spin. Kristen can whisk you through Italy, Australia and the South of France in one swift sentence. For those who like to travel, hop on board. She also has a knack of selecting the right wine for the moment you are in. My margin for error is now even less than when I was ordering beer!

My time spent with Kristen now opens a big question. Have I left beer behind for good and if so, what was the bottle that did it? I’ll keep you posted on my beer to wine ratio, but I can say this for certain … The Petit Verdot from the Adina Winery has got me wobbling on the edge. It’s one of those bottles that you just want to keep drinking. Sorry, it’s one of those cases you just want to keep drinking.

Beer lovers – You have been warned!!

Wine lovers – I’ll see you at the Adina Winery. I’ll be the one in front.

    Thank you Kristen.
